Local campaign to end loneliness
The late MP Jo Cox put it perfectly: “Young or old, loneliness doesn’t discriminate … it is something many of us could easily help with.”
Open Door, Community Space and Cafe in Berkhamsted is excited to be working in partnership with Age UK Dacorum to develop a local campaign to end loneliness – to be known as ‘Berkhamsted says hello!’ This initiative, as part of the Commission on Loneliness, carries on the work of Jo Cox to shine a light on the millions of lonely people living in our communities.
Finding out about services and activities in your local area can make a huge difference and open opportunities to get involved with your community. Open Door, established in 2017, already offers many options for activities and volunteering opportunities. This new initiative builds perfectly upon our ethos and goals for serving the local area and bringing people together.
As part of this project we are developing a new information point, based at Open Door on Berkhamsted High Street. A dedicated Co-ordinator will be available to chat and signpost anyone interested in volunteering opportunities, local events and activities, along with health and wellbeing information. Visitors can also be directed to practical help from national and local support organisations, amongst other things.
A special programme of events is planned, and some are already happening, for example Open Door’s new Tea Dances at the Town Hall. Keep up to date with the latest by checking regularly on our What's On
page.
The project is still in the process of development, with a full launch targeted towards the end of the year. If you are interested in finding out more or would like to get involved and be part of the team of volunteers working on this project, please contact Mary-Jane Martin at Open Door by email [email protected] or call 01442 768120. We would love to hear from you.
